25 Cent Frame Makeover

Remember this picture frame? I bought it for a quarter at a garage sale and figured it would make a great chalkboard for my kitchen.

Garage Sale 001 I finally finished the project and now have a magnetic chalkboard for my kitchen.

My sweet hubby cut a piece of sheet metal for me to prime and paint with chalkboard paint. Now we have a great spot for writing sweet nothings… or grocery lists.

Vacation=Craft Mojo!

I am so excited to say I’m back into a crafting/decorating mood! Apparently, our little getaway was just what Martha Stewart ordered. Since returning home, I’ve been working on several projects trying to get our house in order and ready for Baby #2.

Here’s a quick project I did yesterday afternoon… I’ve been in dire need of a few magazine holders for my craft room but hadn’t found any I loved. While cleaning out my dad’s office, I threw these in the thrift store pile before rethinking the possibilities…

IMG_5926

Ugly, unattractive yet functional.

I just glued some scrapbook paper to the front and trimmed it out with ribbon to beautify them a bit.

A perfect spot for my scrapbooking magazines and felt!

I’ll hopefully get some of my other projects completed and will be sharing those in the upcoming week!

Darling Chairs

When my sister and I went garage saling a few weekends ago, she ran across these to die for chairs! They are child sized and oh, so cute! She got the pair for $25! Later when telling a friend about them, she told me they were asking $25 each when she was at the garage sale. My sister is a photographer and plans on using them for some uber cute childrens photo shoots.
She also picked up that little rug for a mere $2. Perfect condition. The colors don't show up well in this iPhone pic, but it has rich browns and reds in it.

Ugly Painting Made Beautiful

I took an ugly painting from the thrift store and repurposed it as a gift for one of my besties! I’m hoping it will fit in with her kitchen redo she is planning.

I cannot for the life of me find the before picture on my hard drive… just picture it being a very hideous horizontal painting- one that is probably hanging in your grandmother’s house… or hiding in your basement. IMG_5544 IMG_5540

I removed the painting part and gave it a couple coats of primer before spraying it with chalkboard paint.

I painted the frame black and then distressed the edges using sandpaper. I finished it off with a coat of poly.

I added a toothed hanger on the back and used a powerful glue to add the ribbon and initial. I advise to use the hanger on the back to hang the frame and then mount the ribbon on the wall.

Isn’t it amazing what a little spray paint, chalk paint, and pretties can do to something to ordinary? Love it!

My Treasure Chest!

I found this little treasure at a garage sale last weekend…. as in, I’m a week late posting it! This baby has been giving me a run for my money. :) This chest was the lovely price of $30… I couldn’t pass it up! It’s so beautiful with the metal embossing.IMG_5515

It has the original lining intact.. it’s really a lovely design. IMG_5492 IMG_5493 It even has the tray! I’ve never run across a trunk with the tray in it!IMG_5494 IMG_5495 IMG_5496

Super Saturday Sales

Stuff 001

I found some amazing bargains while garage saling on Saturday… even though we had a college graduation to attend at 10 am, I ran to about 5 or 6 sales. I found the above frame for $1. It has the glass and hanging wire. I might end up turning it into a chalkboard.

My other bargains were all kid related. I found my son a set of play plastic dishes for $1, a nice blanket for a $1, and an OU Sooners windsuit for a $1. I know my post is a bit boring this week…. maybe next week’s will be more exciting. I know there is going to be an estate sale near us so I plan on checking that out next weekend!

Check Rhoda’s for more garage sale finds!

Busy, Rainy, Cold Saturday

We had a yucky Saturday morning – it was wet and cold! But I still managed to hit up a few garage sales despite the fact that we were throwing our son’s big birthday party that afternoon. Yeah, I can be a little insane!

I’ll let you guess how much I spent on these purchases…

I got the trike for my son, a new-in-box lamp that needs a shade, a bird cage (in need of a coat of spray paint) and a brand new t-shirt. My grand total came out to $2.85! You read that right! Under $3 for everything. Here’s how it broke down:

Trike $2 (it’s in excellent condition!)
Bird cage .10 (as in ten cents!)
New lamp .25
New t-shirt .50

Anyone else get good deals this weekend? Be sure to link up at Rhoda’s.

A Few Fun Finds!

I had to make a quick trip to a cute little shop downtown in our quaint town. This shop features booths – some are the owner’s but most are rented spaces and are filled with everything from scrapbooking supplies to antiques to boutique baby & maternity items to home decor and much, much more! I happened upon a little treasure trove in one of the booths. Cute things that were all 25% off!

The white containers were $4 & $3! The tag said they are meant to hold flower arrangements. I love this vintage wagon – and you can see my boy loves it too! I want to decorate his room with vintage toys so this was a great find for $13. I am in need of a juicer – especially since I was needing to juice 23 key limes for a dessert I was in the process of making (recipe to come soon! It’s to die for!) My splurge was the McCoy flower pot at $10. I just love, love, love it. It’s a cheerful teal blue. The photo doesn’t do it justice. IMG_4717

After juicing my 23 key limes, I placed the pretty green glass juicer on my stack of plates in my kitchen.IMG_4744

I realized this morning that these can stack inside of each other! How neat is that? I have an idea to use these for an upcoming baby shower I’m helping with…

Happy Anniversary to Me!!!

The hubby and I celebrated our 6th anniversary yesterday! 6 years of bliss, 100 more to come!

We purchased my anniversary gift a few weeks ago - this yellow hutch in need of a transformation. I found it while walking downtown and window shopping at a used furniture store. We called in to check the price and have them measure it. It was the perfect size for my dining room and it was a steal at $84!

Sorry for the bad before pics. We had the hutch in mid-remodel house of my dad's and I didn't have enough room to get a full on pic.

The After!!!
We have one drawer that got unintentionally distressed by a contractor so we have to refinish it and I still need to put the hardware back on. I spray painted the original pulls flat black. They turned out great and it saved money reusing them!

A few treasures I have on it - these birds I found on sale at Michael's
This sweet spring wreath from Michael'sI used the same green paint as here. This green is called Acid Green by Kwal Paint. What a name, right?

Last Week's Thrift Shop Finds

I ran by the thrift store one day to see what they had. I've been eyeing these two cream pottery pieces but I thought they were overpriced at $2 & $1.50. I decided to break down and get them anyway! They go perfectly with my collection of pottery ware.
The bunny was $1.50... they had several of these. They were filthy but a good bath cleaned it up perfectly...

... and a coat of cream paint - beautiful for Easter!

Now I just need to find the perfect thing to fill it's basket.

$4.50

Yep, that's what I spent on these at the thrift store. All of $4.50 plus tax! I'm completely in love with these glass canisters to use in my craft room. They are missing the lids, which I think would be a hassle for me anyway! I got the tall jar to maybe store pipe cleaners for kid projects. And a Cooking Light cookbook for all of .50.

Some of you guys commented that I must have a great thrift store. Well, you are very wrong. I have been dropping in this place off & on for years and rarely every bought anything. My husband hates going in with me because everything kind of seems dirty and yucky. I finally figured out how to shop it. I go straight to the home section and dig. Most of the treasures are found on the bottom shelves behind all kinds of junk. So, go forth and dig! :)

This week's thrift store finds...

I made a trip by the thrift store on Thursday and found a few bargains. I'm so excited to put it all to use! I spent all of $7 plus tax!

I spotted the glass jar and the two glass canisters and thought they would be perfect for my craft room. All my storage is open shelving, so I thought these might be great to store some fun looking things and they offer easy access. There was one other larger canister that I might go back and get. It was priced at $3 which seemed a little high to me. These three were all $1 each - talk about cheap storage.
As many of you already know, the cheese dish will be perfect to display all kinds of beauties! I plan on painting the base black to match my dining room. It was $2. They had two others identical and they were priced $5! Why?

The framed painting is going to be transformed into a magnetic chalkboard!!! It came in at the bargain price of $2. You can't buy a frame for that.

On the magnetic chalkboard news - some of you asked where I found the sheet metal. Well, I am lucky enough to have a daddy who has EVERYTHING! Everything including rolls of sheet metal and a special sheet metal cutter machine thingy (it makes it simple to cut the metal). I have read on other sites that you can buy the sheet metal at Lowe's and other home improvement stores. A pair of tin snips will work for cutting it to size.

Magnetic Chalkboards

Thought I'd share you a couple of gifts I made for my sister-in-laws' birthdays. One of them actually started like this....
Okay, not quite like this... it was all put together (ugly picture in frame)... I just forgot to take a before photo (imagine that!). Anyway, the framed art came from the thrift store. I painted the frame and distressed it, had the hubby cut me some sheet metal, painted it with chalkboard paint, mounted it, and here you have it! How's that for a quick tutorial? I used a paint marker to do the top - not quite sure I like it so I left the second one blank... I am thinking a cute pattern would be perfect though. I'm going to make a few more so I'll do some practice to figure it out.
For the second one, I bought the frame at Hobby Lobby and then did all of the above.

I also wanted to put a wide black & white gingham ribbon on them, but didn't have any. Boo! I wrapped these up with marble magnets I made and tied some chalk up with ribbon. It is a fairly easy project - I just waited until the last minute to put it all together and started stressing over the details! I can't wait to make more and figure out ways to glam them up!

A Before & After!!!!!

I am SOOOOOOOO EXCITED to show you my recent before & after project!!! I bought this lamp at the thrift store for $8. I saw the potential... and was so excited that I immediately painted it when I got home... as in, I ran in the house and put the tot down for his nap and then started painting. The original color is a wood like brown. It looks black in the picture though. So, I painted it black with visions of maybe attempting to recover the lampshade... until I found this:
Then, my vision changed! Completely! Now, I've completely re-done my craft room to coordinate with the lampshade. And I repainted the lamp again! Here's the finished project. I think she turned out beautiful.
I told the hubby that I'm thinking about repainting the lamp hot pink now... he rolled his eyes at me. :)
